We at Here & There Makers are all about supporting women locally and globally. The primary way we do this is by funding Days for Girls Ferntree Gully Chapter. DfG FTG as part of Days for Girls International creates beautiful, long lasting sanitary hygiene kits for women and girls around the world to fight period poverty and provide pathways and opportunities through improved access to education as well as micro enterprise development.
We also love to support other fairly traded makers overseas, such as the team at Second Chance Bangkok working with women from the Klong Toey slum area to upcycle donated clothing into bags and other useful items. Pebble hand crocheted toys supporting women in rural Bangladesh and Eco Max brushware in Sri Lanka are other examples.
Locally, we support many women-run small businesses such as Quintessence Soaps, Robyn’s Soap House, Warbotanicals, Urthly Organics, One Happy Leaf, Myrtle & Me, Lovearth Yoga Mats, Earth Greetings, and many other small family businesses that include women.
And not to forget some of our most special women – our amazing volunteers who sew many of our in-house products as well as all the fantastic volunteers who are involved with Days for Girls making thousands of sanitary kits every year.
International Women’s Day has been celebrated since 1911. It is a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Importantly the day is also a call to action for accelerating gender parity and fundraising to support women’s charities. The theme for IWD 2021 is ‘Choose to Challenge’. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change. For more information see https://www.internationalwomensday.com/About

We would love to see governments funding reusable menstrual products for free as it is a basic human need to manage a natural bodily function that half the population has to manage for a significant period of their life. Considering that menstrual products only became GST free in Australia on the 1st of January 2019, it might be a while before such a campaign sees change. In the meantime it would be excellent if more local councils funded the outlay in purchasing reusable period products like many have done with compost bins rebating 40-50% of the purchase price. We recently became aware that Cardinia Council offer a rebate program on reusable menstrual products and nappies.
If your local council area does too, we’d love to hear about it and share the news and if they don’t, let the waste management department or your local councillor know you’d like them to establish one as a priority.
